If you can wait several years to get promoted, then by all means, take the “good guy” approach. Everybody here who works/has worked for HD has seen first hand what I’m talking about. I do love working for The Home Depot, because I just think it’s a wonderful place to work. I love the bonding, co-workers, and most of all I like the advancement that the company has. The hours, the time we come in, the time we get off. I still have time to do things in the afternoon and in today’s economy, you want to have a job you know is going to be there.

I am fairly new to The Home Depot world, but I was hired in as a Department Supervisor due to my previous managerial history. I was wondering if anyone here has any specific routines, scheduled tasks, best practices, etc. that could help me go the extra mile and make me stand out as I work toward a promotion. I am simply looking for some senior leadership and guidance from any successful employees that have recently been promoted or know exactly what it takes. With stores, distribution centers, and corporate offices across the country, your next opportunity might be right around the corner. When I first got here that was what I’m seeking and I’m experiencing it and at this point the sky’s the limit for me. When I started working here, I thought it was going to be like any other job, where they just like okay you are just another worker, but not here. Oh what makes me good at my job is that I’m a people person. I just generally enjoy being around folks. Compensation data tools, salary structures, surveys and benchmarks. This is accomplished through organizing and supervising staff in all departments and monitoring workflow and machine efficiencies throughout the shift.
What does a Department Supervisor do?
Compliments for handling such a big group. I can't tell you how many times I've seen new DS's and ASM's fail simply because they want to "assert dominance" and reinvent the wheel to show their team how it's done. It sounds harsh but seriously, approach your team as the "new guy" who wants them to show you how it's done at your store. There's only so much we can teach you over the internet, and your fellow DH's will know your specific store's way of doing things far better than any of us could. Sit back and observe for the first few weeks.

It opens more time for you to spend time in your department. Don't ever discount your team's knowledge. Chances are you have some seasoned HD veterans whose knowledge of the business is invaluable. Seek their wisdom and don't be afraid to ask them questions.

If you have an apartment, if you have a home, if you want to go out on your own and do contractor handyman work, you’re going to learn so much.
